Megan Crase and Patricia Tram Awarded IIDA Scholarships

Congratulations! UNT Interior Design senior students, Megan Crase and Patricia Tram, received the 2013 IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter Education Fund Scholarships for Tuition Reimbursement for $3,000. Those recipients will be recognized as guests at the annual IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter Student Conference in February 2014 in Houston, TX.

Sara Allen Received IIDA Tuition Reimbursement Grant

Sara Allen, junior, has been selected to receive one of the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter 2012 Tuition Reimbursement Grants. The selection committee applauded her academic achievements, campus activities and involvement and commitment to overall excellence in education in the field of Interior Design. The award recipient will be recognized at the Annual IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter Annual Student Conference, February 21-22, 2013.

Sofiahawa Ashraf and Megan Crase Awarded Charn Uswachoke's Grants

A senior, Sofiahawa Ashraf and Megan Crase, junior, received the Charn Uswachoke’s Grant to the GIDE conference in Slovenia.

Recycled Bottles Daylight Project Brightened Art Building Stairwells

Interior Design program seniors’ project brightened inside the stairwells in the Art building. Bruce Nacke of the Interior Design Program faculty assigned students to create a project that would enhance daylight inside the stairwells for an interior design topics class.

Our seniors, Madiha Latif, Amanda Moss, Robyn Nicholson, and Vanessa Weidner created the recycled plastic bottle project. An article about this project is available on NTDaily.com

Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program for Sustainability

On Wednesday, November 18, CVAD faculty and students initiated activities on the Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program. Students will be assisting in an ongoing research project, Growing Green: Interior Design Student Perceptions of Sustainability, a current study comparing attitudes of freshmen and seniors in the interiors program.

Interior Design Student Alliance (IDSA) Selected as Student Organization of the Month

Congratulations, UNT Interior Design Student Alliance (IDSA) has been chosen as the Student Organization of September, 2013! As Student Organization of the Month the IDSA will receive a monetary co-sponsorship from Student Activities.

IDSA combines 3 professional organizations into 1 student organization to help bridge the gap between students and professionals. Being a part of IDSA will provide interior design students with a way to acquire and develop personal and professional relationships that benefit its members during their education. 2013 ASID Student Symposium in Dallas

ASID Texas Chapter 2013 Student Symposium was held on October 18th and 19th in Dallas. Students from design schools all over Texas and a few from other states attended. The first day was held at the World Trade Center in Dallas and the second day it was held at Frank Lloyd Wright's Kalita Humphreys Theater in Dallas. Participants were able to tour showrooms, listen to many professional speakers, and participate in a design charette.

2013 NEWH Life of Design Event

The NEWH Life of Design scholarship fundraising event was held on October 17, 2013, located at the Fashion Institute Gallery in downtown Dallas, Texas. There was a great turnout from UNT students. UNT Interior Design students had three student chair submissions, and the event raised money for student scholarships. Later in the year, UNT students will be able to apply to receive those scholarships. Two of our exchange students participated on a team chair design as well.

UNT Interior Design Students Awarded from NEWH Chair Competition

UNT Interior Design student groups participated in NEWH Chair Competition. Our sophomore, Efren Estrada was placed fifth in the competition. The Screaming Eagles team comprised of Rachael Armstrong, Marta Caceres, Heather Morrow, Rashel Smith, and Chelsey Snider participated in the competition and their design titled "32 degrees of change" was nominated with four other designs from the Student/Individual Group for the People's Choice Award.

Amber Greenday, Senior Received ASID Scholarship

Our senior, Amber Greenday received a $1500 Scholarship from the ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) Texas Chapter. This was one of three scholarships awarded during the ASID Student Symposium held in Dallas, October 16 and 17. The awards will be featured in the next edition of the ASID Texas Chapter newsletter.

Stephen Walsh, Teknion's Student Design Competition 2009 Winner, Featured on the UNT Homepage

Zach Weihrich, 2010 HKS Design Fellow

Our senior, Zach Weihrich has been selected as a 2010 HKS Design Fellow. He will be joining two of their peers from local Universities to participate in a design charrette with 9 design professionals at the HKS international headquarters in Dallas, Texas. The charrette begins on Friday November 12th and will conclude with a final jury presentation Monday evening November 15, 2010.

HKS initiated the design fellowship in 2006 in order to cultivate emerging design talent; excite and stimulate new design approaches; and simultaneously provide a service to benefit the communities they serve. This is the first year HKS has opened this up to students and they are looking forward to an exciting exchange of ideas in design.

Greta Buehrle’s presentation selected as the Best Presentation at the IDEC SW Regional Conference

Greta Buehrle, an Interior Design graduate student, presented her thesis project at the IDEC Southwest Regional Conference in Lubbock. This is the first time that a graduate student presentation has been given this award. Her presentation entitled “Speeding Up Design: The Influence of Technology on Creativity & Time Management in the Design Process” focused on how technology impacts on decision-making stage in design process. An abstract of the study is as follows.

Technology driven programs such as Autodesk’s Revit and Google’s Sketch-Up are quickly becoming “the norm” in day-to-day practice at architecture and interior design firms across the world. The client-driven desire to produce documents and design ideas faster and the ability of the programs to develop ideas in 3D are major contributing causes for this movement. Many users of the programs, specifically programs utilizing BIM technology, are struggling to come to grips with the impact these programs are having on the design process. With BIM technology, many decisions normally assessed in the design development or construction document stage, must be made in the early stages of design work. However, many supporters of the programs emphasize that the ability to see designs in 3D, as well as the ease of making late design changes in the program allow decisions to be made quickly. This study will determine how this technology may affect designers’ creativity as well as how it may be affecting decision-making in the design process. While results from this study will be of interest to those involved in the professional practice of architecture and interior design, understanding the affect of technology on the practiced design process will assist educators in knowing how to best prepare their students to enter the profession.

Kimberly Dickerson, 2012 HKS Design Fellow

UNT Interior Design senior, Kimberly Dickerson has been selected as a 2012 HKS Design Fellow and will be joining two of her peers from other Universities to participate in a design charrette with 9 design professionals at the HKS international headquarters in Dallas this November. ASID's Charrette Winners at Student Symposium in Dallas

UNT Interior Design students won ASID's Charrette at their Student Symposium in Dallas. The three students on the team were: Senior Zan Farrow, Senior Katie Lewis, and Sophomore Erin Bailey.

The charrette involved selecting finishes and furniture for a hypothetical client's guest house using a $45,000 budget. The team visited showrooms and collaborated together to design a space that met the aesthetic and budgetary needs of the client.

Kimberly Dickerson & Sara Allen Won the ASID Design Competition

UNT Interior Design students participated in the ASID Texas Chapter 2012 Student Symposium in Dallas October 5-6, 2012. A team of UNT Interior Design students, senior, Kimberly Dickerson and junior, Sara Allen, won the first prize of the Speed Charette. The charette was a two-hour competition to design a pop-up shop for the re-selling of items (such as beds, chairs, lamps, etc) used for the temporary Athlete's Village of the 2012 London Olympics. Their project board included a concept statement, a floor plan, three perspectives, and material selection.

Kimberly Dickerson Awarded ASID Student Scholarship

The ASID Student Scholarship for $1500 was awarded to Kimberly Dickerson by the Texas Chapter Student Scholarship Committee. The winners were based on their application, merit, and images of their design work.
